Abstract:

This presentation introduces RBTs to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and applied behavior analysis (ABA). It reviews the diagnostic criteria for autism and common characteristics associated with ASD, including differences in social communication, restricted or repetitive behaviors, and sensory processing. The variability of how autism presents across individuals will be emphasized. 

Participants will also gain an overview of ABA as an evidence-based treatment approach and explore the concept of medical necessity within ABA therapy. The presentation concludes with a clear distinction between the roles and responsibilities of BCBAs and RBTs, highlighting supervision, scope of practice, and collaboration in providing ethical and effective services.

Nichole O’Donnell, M.Ed., BCBA, LBA, is the Director of Clinical Services at Empower Behavioral Health, where she leads clinical operations across multiple service locations and strategic initiatives for the company. She is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and Licensed Behavior Analyst with over 15 years of experience in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Nichole began her career as a behavior technician and has worked extensively with individuals of all ages and severity levels. She specializes in inclusion skills, social skills, and executive functioning, with a strong focus on supporting clients in community settings such as schools and workplaces. She holds a Master of Education in Special Education from Texas A&M University. In her role as a BCBA, Nichole has managed complex cases, developed meaningful programming that helps clients achieve their life goals, and ensured individualized treatment plans align with evidence-based practices. She has guided and mentored BCBAs and Clinical Directors, fostering professional growth and clinical excellence. Throughout her career, Nichole has led after-school programs, social skills groups, and adult seminars, and delivered comprehensive training for technicians, BCBAs, parents, and community members. Passionate about strategic planning and operational efficiency, Nichole enjoys creating systems and resources that enhance service delivery. Her mission is to empower individuals with autism and their families through inclusive opportunities and high-quality care.
