Chapter Overview:

A central feature of applied behavior analysis (ABA) is the use of scientific methods to objectively evaluate clinical procedures and client outcomes. Whether making informed clinical decisions or seeking alternative treatments, behavior analysts use research as the foundation for their work within autism service provider organizations. When clinicians use empirically derived interventions (interventions that are supported by research) with their clients, they promote ethical practices (Behavior Analyst Certification Board [BACB], 2020, Standards 2.13, 2.14) and maximize the likelihood of positive client outcomes.

Researchers and practitioners within the ABA community enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship. Research informs good clinical practice, and practice in turn often raises important clinical questions that drive applied research. When clinicians conduct and disseminate their own systematic evaluations, they improve upon the field of ABA at large.
